Taekwondo
WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) Taekwondo is a dynamic, full contact sport, which has evolved from the traditional Korean martial art. Points are scored by full contact kicks to the body and the face. Body punches are legal but rarely score. Kicks below the belt and punches to the face are illegal. Taekwondo is a fast moving sport with lots of action, footwork and tactical game play. It is a great spectator sport.
Although Korea still produces most of the world champions, other countries such as Australia, Spain, Iran, Chinese Taipei and Mexico are now hot on their heels.
With the introduction of the Olympic Athlete Program in 1995 and the Olympic coach Jintae Jeong, Australia has risen from being ranked number 40 in the world to an equal 2nd place with Cuba at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Hopefully this success will continue at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and Australia will bring home medals for Taekwondo.
